Take Action - Agriculture

Why is biodiversity important for agriculture?

The importance of agriculture for Ireland’s biodiversity cannot be underestimated. Farming communities are the custodians of our natural environment. Many habitats that we perceive as natural have been shaped by agriculture i.e. heath and sand dunes have been heavily influenced by agricultural practices over the centuries.

However, with the intensification of agriculture in recent times, certain agricultural practices have resulted in habitat degradation and pollution of watercourses. Biodiversity is the basis for agriculture, it provides us with a varied food supply, which is needed for human nutrition. It is essential for the provision of pollinators and soil organisms needed for growth.

Farming for Biodiversity - Notice Nature Study Tour November 08

Farmer Padraig Moran and Michael Martyn of NPWS

Notice Nature organised a study tour for journalists to see the biodiversity work that Padraig Moran is undertaking on his farm as part of the NPWS Farm Plan scheme. Padraig Moran’s farm is located in Lusmagh, Offaly, between All Saints Bog and Little Brosna Callows. He farms suckler cows on 107 acres.

Padraig joined the NPWS Farm Plan Scheme in July 2007 and is working with the NPWS to protect the designated sites and important species found within his farmland.
