Speaking at the awards ceremony the Custom House, Dublin, Minister Gormley expressed his delight at the public response to the competition stating, “the interest in the campaign shows the keen interest the Irish people have in their natural environment and the winning entries are all beautiful images”. He went on to say that increasing public awareness of the importance of biodiversity was an important challenge and would be a key element in Ireland’s efforts to halt biodiversity loss.
Over 7,500 entries were received from amateur photographers all over the country. The judging panel were Mike Brown, Wildlife Photographer, Martin King from TV3 and Dr Marian Coll, Ecologist from “Notice Nature”.
“Overall there were some great photos from all over the country, which made picking the winning three very difficult,” says Mike Brown, Wildlife Photographer and Chair of the judging panel. “There was some great creativity and some interesting and unusual viewpoints on our nature. It is always difficult to judge any photography competition and all the other shortlisted photos are excellent and the photographers are to be congratulated.”
