World Wetlands Day 2nd. February
Each year, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community take advantage of the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits. The suggested World Wetlands Day theme for this year is, Wetlands, Biodiversity and Climate Change
International Day of Biodiversity 22nd. May
Ireland celebrates National Biodiversity Week around this date each year. National Biodiversity Week is organised in a partnership between National Parks and Wildlife Service, the local authorities and a wide range of environmental organisations. Further details of events will appear on this page shortly.
World Environment Day 5th. June
World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
Commemorated yearly on 5 June, World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The day's agenda is to:
- Give a human face to environmental issues;
- Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;
- Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues;
- Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
