- Red Squirrel - The original red squirrels of Ireland were reckoned extinct by the 1700s, when forest clearance and hunting for their fur had taken the ultimate toll. They were reintroduced from England in the 1800s and spread rapidly. Today they are under threat again from fragmentation of their habitats and competition from Grey squirrels

PROTECTED SPECIES
All threatened species are protected by the EU Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC) or the Wildlife Act 1976. Some of our most threatened species include (Not in order)

- All Bat species- Including Whiskered Bat, Natterer's Bat, Daubenton's Bat, Leisler's Bat and the Pipistrelles

Birdwatch Ireland and RSPB Northern Ireland have agreed a list of priority bird species for conservation action on the island of Ireland. Red List – Birds of High conservation concern include
